Hip Hop Research: Book List at 51 Academic Titles & Growing!

Hip Hop Research, a new blog from Clyde Smith devoted to documenting academic studies of hip hop, has reached 51 titles with more on the way.

Entries feature the book's cover art, when available, and basic links to WorldCat, a world library search engine, as well as options from Amazon and Google for checking out the book's content.

The long term goal is to use this book list as a basis for an annotated bibligraphy of academic studies of hip hop but it's pretty cool just to see what researchers have already accomplished in this area of study.

Please pass this news on to students, educators, researchers and folks who like to know what's up!

RnB Press and Urban Arts & Fashion Press Moving to Hip Hop Press Site

I'm in the process of reorganizing things and have decided to merge RnB Press and Urban Arts & Fashion Press with Hip Hop Press.

Feedburner feeds, subscription options and Twitter feeds will remain the same though there may be a bit of bumpiness over the next couple of days.

The merger will create a Hip Hop Press home page and dated archives that will display press releases from all three previously separate blogs while topical themes will be found under the categories:
Hip Hop Press Releases
RnB Press Releases
Urban Arts and Fashion Press Releases

I'm also going to become more selective about which releases I run. Although I now occasionally reject releases for glaring spelling and grammar errors, moving forward correct spelling and grammar will generally be a prerequisite for inclusion, though slang and other nonstandard approaches will be honored as an element of these interconnected subcultures.

I apologize for the confusion around the different sites and related developments and I'm hoping this will not only clear up some of the confusion but also lead to a better look for the RnB and Urban Arts & Fashion press releases.

Questions, comments and publicity materials can be sent to:

Note:
Ads will be getting a little junkier and more annoying.  I guess that's the cost of free in a deepening recessions.  Though I'll probably pull that fat naked belly ad pretty soon cause it's getting on my nerves too!

Celebrity Sports & Talent Agent Glenn Toby Joins The Write Stuff Reality Show

Shadow Play Entertainment, Innovations, Inc., Hollygrove Publishing and their partners in encouraging literacy throughout the United States are gearing up for a historic literary journey of a lifetime: to find the next big thing in publishing. They realize that reading is not only important but providing quality entertainment to the masses is also vital. Introducing "The Write Stuff" (http://www.thewritestufftv.com), a new reality show designed to assist individuals in their quest to better understand how to get their work recognized as well as network with those who have made it in the industry.

This new project will not only encourage creativity but provide assistance to those who are looking to make it in the world of publishing.  Created by Cyrus A. Webb (Shadow Play Entertainment/ Conversations Book Club/Hiphop and Books Foundation) and Zane Bell (Innovations, Inc.), the show will take fourteen (14) contestants who have drive, ambition and the willingness to succeed through 14 weeks of challenges that will prepare them for the competitive literary world that they want to be a part of.

As The Write Stuff continues making history in 2009, its partnership with recognizable names and organizations continues to grow. Celebrity Sports & Talent Agent Glenn Toby and his Book Bank Foundation are now sponsors of the project and will aide in promoting the premise of the show as well as supports its main objectives.

"It's simple as ABC," says Toby when discussing the collaboration. "Education is "the right stuff" you need to open closed minds and locked doors. Cyrus and Zane have created a much needed televison show that has value, purpose and excitement. This is the type of vehicle we need to educate and entertain in a manner that encourages everyone to not just tune in but turn on their awareness."

This is not just empty rhetoric. Once homeless and living on the streets of New York City, Glenn Toby was able to use books in his own life to not only educate himself but empower those around him. He created the Book Bank Foundation in 1997 to positively impact the quality of life for New York's homeless. Initially, its primary purpose was to help educate the homeless; Toby believed illiteracy led to crime, addiction, mental illness and despair. Today his initiative has expanded and includes clothing, feeding and educating the homeless. The Philanthropist's goodwill and benevolence have helped millions of families across the United States. "My life's purpose is to heal souls and touch hearts," says Toby. "I can't save the world, but I promised God that I would serve the poor and do all in my power to save those that are lost and without a voice."

When speaking about how the Book Bank Foundation will aide the reality show, Toby adds this: "The book bank foundation has found "the right stuff" joining forces with Shadow Play Entertainment. Cyrus A Webb is passionate about quality family entertainment and knows how to deliver. My film company Precision Pictures & Films is going to assist in every way to create an awareness about need for education and the disease of poverty." Toby has been added to the team as an Executive Producer with the show and will occasionally host a special Youtube Channel show that will incorporate some of the star power that comes with his brand while staying true to the overall mission and purpose of encouraging literacy and supporting the dreams of those who wish to make it in the publishing world. Toby is also bringing Jeff Gulko (highly sought-after national consultant) and Malik Williams (celebrated composer and Music Supervisor for The Write Stuff) onboard as Contributing Producers on the project in order to add to its success.

Airing on the CW Channel, select My Network Channels and ABC affiliates, The Write Stuff Reality Show will be seen in cities across the country to an audience of over 20 million households. After airing, all episodes will be available on The Write Stuff TV channel on Youtube found at http://www.youtube.com/thewritestufftv. As new markets open, previous episodes will be re-aired with the finale airing simultaneously.

During the interview process, "The Write Stuff" will put the contestants in the faces of those who can make it happen and give them the tools they need to be successful. At stake is the ultimate prize for anyone who wants to make their mark on the industry: a ONE-BOOK DEAL provided by Hollygrove Publishing! Along with the book deal and recognition of having "The Write Stuff" comes a prize package worth over $16,000. There will also be features in Conversations Magazine (online and print), Poetic Monthly Magazine (online and print), Crunk Magazine(online and print), Hype Magazine along with other publications across the country!

NALIP 10: A Decade of Influence: The National Association of Latino Independent Producers Celebrates Its Tenth Anniversary and Examines the Past, Present and Future of Latinos in Film

Presented by HBO(R) and the National Latino Media Council, NALIP's Annual Conference will be held at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach, California, April 17 - 19, 2009

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) today announced its Tenth Annual NALIP Conference, co-chaired by Columbia University professor/ filmmaker Frances Negron-Muntaner, producer/ executive David Ortiz (WANTED, HELLBOY 2), and writer/producer Ligiah Villalobos (LA MISMA LUNA). The Conference, presented by HBO and the National Latino Media Council, will be held April 17 - 19 in Newport Beach, California. Online registration is available now at www.nalip.org/.

NALIP was founded in 1999 to address the vital need for equitable Latino representation across all entertainment mediums. Although 16% of the population, Latinos continue to make up less than 3% of movie and television roles. In Hollywood and network television, Latinos also comprise less than 1% of executives. "The impact of this state of affairs is significant," says co- chair and NALIP co-founder Frances Negron-Muntaner. "The fact that there are so few Latinos involved in the media industry and so few Latino stories are told, seriously distorts what the United States is about and deprives us all of an entire population's creativity."

Over the past ten years of work to bring on change, NALIP has become the premiere resource for Latinos in the entertainment industry. In addition to being an essential career and networking tool for the Latino community, NALIP is a trend forecaster. NALIP provides members and non-members alike an opportunity to learn about funding directions, and to discuss new models of production and distribution in a rapidly changing digital environment. As the main media organization for the United States' largest minority group, whose members also have ties to other entertainment capitals like Mexico City, NALIP serves as a hub for the development of untold stories and fresh approaches to media production, both locally and globally.

"As a NALIP supporter since the beginning and throughout its evolution, HBO is proud of the role it's played in helping to advance Latinos within the creative community," said Lucinda Martinez Desir, vice president, Acquisition & Multicultural Marketing. "And as an entertainment company, the ability to share our resources and visions in such a dynamic forum as NALIP continues to be a great honor."

NALIP 10: A Decade of Influence will bring together the best in Latino entertainment to both spotlight the remarkable growth of Latinos in cinema over the past decade, as well as create new opportunities that increase the presence of Latinos in entertainment. "Filmmakers know how invaluable it is to interact with industry leaders and innovators - the networks, the distribution companies, fellow creators," says NALIP Executive Director Kathryn Galan. "We know what makes a good Conference: we make it the place where our industry comes together to network, figure out where our profession is headed, and how we can continue to produce and distribute content that sells."

The Conference will include the second Latino edition of Backstage's Actorfest, the fifth annual Latino Media Market, a feature film sneak preview, three days of idea-to-screen case studies, workshops and plenaries on film, television and documentaries. Esteemed filmmakers such as writer/director Alex Rivera, documentary producers Marco Williams and Phillip Rodriguez, directors Luis Valdez and Alfredo deVilla, and summer blockbuster GI JOE's Marlon Wayans will also discuss and analyze thought-provoking case studies, with panels on a wide range of topics, including comedy, new models of digital distribution, internet content creation, and producing a Latino television pilot. Executives from HBO, Universal, SAG, MTV Networks, Warner Bros., CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, PBS and many others are scheduled to attend and participate. They will participate in seminars, plenaries and a Fast Track Latino Project Pitch forum on the concluding morning. "The NALIP Conference is a dynamic event for content producers at all stages of their career," states co-chair David Ortiz. "Advanced film makers have the opportunity to teach while novice film makers receive the mentoring opportunity of a lifetime. Having spent the past three years at NBC Universal looking for talented Latino filmmakers, I can tell you, there is no other program or resource in town that offers this to their members."

Further elevating the Tenth Anniversary, NALIP will recognize three media luminaries for their exemplary contribution to the entertainment industry in the following categories: Pioneer Achievement for Advocacy, actor/activist Ray Andrade ("Chico and the Man"), Outstanding Achievement Award, Kenny Ortega, (Director, HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR) and Pioneer Achievement for Filmmaking, Raphael Montanez Ortiz ("Destructivism: A Manifesto"). HBO and HBO Latino(R) will receive a special Award that recognizes the company's commitment to diversity and their support of the Latino media field. For a list of speakers, panels and keynotes please visit www.nalip.org/.

About NALIP:

Founded in 1999 by a group of Latino producers, educators and media activists, NALIP's mission is to promote the advancement, development and funding of Latino and Latina film and media arts in all genres. NALIP is committed to improving access and opportunities for Latina/os at all points in the media production pipeline, including the training of our next generation of media makers, and the support of emerging and mid-career professionals. It is a national organization of industry, independent and community producers dedicated to increasing the quality and quantity of images by, for and about Latinos in the media. Culturally Responsible Streetwear Company Launches in Support of Sudanese Orphanage

New York, NY1/27/09 (Hip Hop PR Wire) -- Fritswa B. initially launched her clothing company Afrik in order to keep her friends from taking her clothes. Fritswa started out painting images of Pan-African culture onto her favorite hoodies for a fashion show at Cornell University. The response from the show was so positive that she decided to form Afrik Clothing from her dorm room in 2007. "I'd get like 12 phone calls a day from people I didn't know asking me to paint them a hoodie," she stated. "I was like, 'Seriously? I have to graduate'."

Afrik has since expanded the line to include t-shirts, sweaters, vests, and dresses all with the goal of spreading a culturally responsible message. The most popular pieces include the 'Afrik' hoodie and the 'Barack Star' t-shirt which features a graphically enhanced portrait of Barack Obama's face embedded in a star. "The underlying concept is that the communities represented in the designs all have ties back to Africa. I wanted to fill in the history in a unique way." Afrik plans to include little known facts on their tags as a way to display the dynamic history of the Diaspora. She explains, "I think mainstream culture has really ignored an amazing story."

The past year has seen rapid growth for the company. Afrik has been embraced by a number of celebrities and is currently sponsoring an orphanage in Juba, Sudan. The proceeds of their launch on February 13th, 2009 at Katra Lounge in New York City will be used to purchase vital supplies and fund programming for 66 children separated from their families during wartime. The line can be found in streetwear boutiques across New York City as well as online at www.afrikstyle.com.

There's No Business Like 2.0 Business

SpotCo's digital advertising expertise takes show business to new 'heights'

NEW YORK, Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- When a fan of the wildly popular computer game company SIMS 2 incorporated a theatrical ad agency's creative into that world last month, it marked the legitimization of a new trend on Broadway -- online viral campaigns.

Sara Fitzpatrick, Director of Interactive for SpotCo, now the leading full-service theatrical advertising agency working with Broadway and off- Broadway productions, maintains that something went terribly right in her agency's viral execution of advertising for the 2008 Tony Broadway Musical of the Year In The Heights. Fitzpatrick said, "The partnership with the producers of In The Heights was a marriage made in heaven because of their own digital connections and sophistication. We hit the jackpot with a buzz that spread like wild fire on YouTube."

SpotCo has been working closely with theater producers for awhile as they finally got ready to step up their online presence to spread the word of mouth among Internet users. The websites of Broadway shows typically come with the requisite biographies of the cast and creative team, critics' blurbs and a link to buy tickets online. But until SpotCo's breakthrough campaigns for Shrek, Xanadu, Chicago, White Christmas and In The Heights came along, theater advertising was very traditional and one-dimensional. SpotCo, ever the innovator, has jumped headlong into the 2.0 world and made the relationship between their shows and the public far more interactive, more of a genuine experience that reflects the emotional reality of each show.

The agency's innovative client campaigns reflect their determination to tap into the digital world with a wide menu of firsts in the industry that includes social networking, community boards, blogs, widgets, jukeboxes and several music videos featuring the cast and, of course, irreverent spoofs and satire. Even a simple ad banner under SpotCo's guidance becomes something interactive and elegant, allowing users to listen to several songs from a Broadway show by simply moving your mouse across the banner. SpotCo, the boffo, irreverent white-hot ad shop, is leading the way, ensuring that its creative reaches the broadest base of theater-goers in the history of Broadway.

For instance, when SpotCo worked with In The Heights creator Lin-Manuel Miranda they lampooned the MTV reality show that chose a replacement for the lead in Legally Blonde. In the series Legally Brown (legallybrownbroadway.com and on YouTube), Broadway stars like Matthew Morrison of South Pacific, Allison Janney of the coming 9-5 the Musical and Cheyenne Jackson of Xanadu competed to become the next piragua vendor on In The Heights.

SpotCo is now widely admired for its ability to tap into the Internet to take advantage of its global community, for instance, using web marketing for show tunes to ensure that clients' audiences are satisfied with their investment. The web not only allows people to easily research the best value for their dollar, but is a medium that encourages them to return online and listen to the songs whenever they wish. This serves to keep the Broadway experience and memories fresh, an investment that has a long life.

Still another example of SpotCo's digital diligence is the Shrekster website which mocks the conventions of social networking sites like Friendster and Facebook. Becoming a member is as free as wishing on a star or eating someone else's porridge. The site proclaims all you need to join is an email address and a password.

The website Shrekster offers content such as profiles of characters from "Shrek the Musical," as well as make-believe theatrical news under headlines like "Wolf Eats 3 Ladies for Lunch in Horrific Matinee Attack."

As Sara Fitzpatrick of SpotCo concludes, "It's clear that theater advertising will never be the same."

And with more new shows lining up for Broadway this spring, be prepared for new surprises online!

Brazil, once the world's largest slave colony, was brutal and deadly for millions of Africans. But many thousands escaped and rebelled, creating settlements in Brazil's untamed hinterland. Largely unknown to the outside world, these communities struggle today to preserve a rich heritage born of resistance to oppression.

"Quilombo Country" includes rare footage of festivals and ceremonies that blend Catholic, African and native Amazonian rituals and customs, and examines issues of political identity, land rights, and racial and socioeconomic discrimination. The film is narrated by Chuck D, the legendary poet, media commentator and leader of the iconic hip hop band Public Enemy.

"Quilombo Country" has played at more than 20 film festivals worldwide, winning Best Documentary at Black International Cinema Berlin, and has been acquired by more than 300 universities, museums and other cultural organizations.

The Taller Latino Americano (The Latin American Workshop), renowned for its Spanish classes and art shows and programs, is a gathering place for culturally and linguistically diverse people who come together to share their ideas and find creative inspiration.
